About us

HARLI was founded to meet the increasing need for Domestic Abuse and Sexual Assault support and services on Long Island. Over the past decade, the population on the East End of Long Island has increased on average 25-30%, especially after the onset of the Covid-19 Pandemic. With 1 in 3 women and 1 in 4 men experiencing domestic abuse and nationally over 400,000 adults and children being traumatized by sexual assault each year, the number of people in our own community needing support services has increased dramatically. We are here to offer trauma informed support and services, with bilingual advocates and case managers and referrals to legal and counseling services.

Statistics on Domesic Violence and sexual assault

324,000

Roughly 324,000 pregnant women — or about 8 percent — experience abuse in the United States each year, research has found. And experts estimate that these numbers may be underreported. 

fifty percent

50 percent of women who are homeless report that domestic violence was the immediate cause of their homelessness. ​

Approximately one in 10 Americans aged 60+ have experienced some form of elder abuse. Some estimates range as high as five million elders who are abused each year. One study estimated that only one in 24 cases of abuse are reported to authorities.

An estimated 2 in 5 (39%) female victims of rape had a disability at the time of the rape.
Nearly 1 in 4 (24%) male victims who experienced sexual violence other than rape had a disability at the time of the victimization.
